In Romeo it was the Peach Festival where the festivities centered around Mike and Amy's. In Mackinac City it was the bridge walk, and on Wheeler Road we had a visit from Bev and Gary Clark from Houghton Lake. It was a perfect holiday weekend in the north country with temperatures in the low eighties and nothing but sunshine all weekend.
We finally went canoeing on the Platte River on Sunday and luckily got started before the crowds packed in. By the time we were leaving there were cars backed up for nearly a mile along both sides of Lake Michigan Road and the parking lots were full. By that time the river was loaded with canoes, kayaks and tubes all floating downstream. We found that the river was a great place to go canoeing as long as you go when the crowds are not too bad. It was a beautiful ride and at the end you can relax on the beach on Lake Michigan.
On Monday we went out to Glen Haven and took the hike to the northern tip of Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. The tip of the point was very rustic and not at all crowded as it's off the beaten path for most of the tourists.
On Monday night we finally got a little rain for the first time in about three weeks.
Launching at the Platte River
We ate our lunch at a wide spot on the river called Loon Lake. There was a sandbar here where everyone got out to take a break and some went for a swim
Back on the mainstream for the second leg of our journey
We made it to the river mouth at Lake Michigan
The beach here was fairly crowded and a great spot to swim
Lots of folks enjoying the sunshine
Even the locals where having a good time!
On Sunday, hiking the north tip of Sleeping Bear
It's a short hike through the dunes to the shoreline
The northern tip of the dunes
We found the remains of an old ship washed up on the shore
Could it be the Titanic?
The coast here was beautiful and not too many people
An old telephone post was almost buried in the dunes. Was this the old site of Glen Haven?
