The drive took us into the center of the mountains that make up this part of the Island. Its a lush ,tropical valley that was the agricultural center for the native people centuries ago. This area played a big part in the battle for governorship of the Hawaiian Islands in the 1500's. A major battle was fought here and there were large numbers of warriors killed on the shores of the river here.
We walked the trails and took in the sights. Later we drove north along the coast until the road started getting dicey. I wasn't ready to re live the road to Hana just yet, so we turned around and went back to the condo and the pool where we spent the afternoon.
Today it's Superbowl Sunday and we have yet to finalize our plans for the day.
Coming to the Iao Valley.
The Iao Needle rises 1200 feet from the valley floor.
Parking in the Iao Valley at the state park.
My flower girl.
These leaves were 3 feet across!
Standing along the stream.
The water here (four rivers come together), was used for irrigating crops.
Hawaiian plants were on display, both native and introduced species.
The needle was used by early people as a lookout to protect against invasion.
The northeast coast of Maui.
