Another beautiful day in southern Florida. We loafed around this morning and had a leisurely breakfast. Probably wasted too much time. We packed lunches and headed for the beaches at Marco Island. We got into quite a bit of traffic and didn't know our way around. We never did find the beaches! We did some shopping in town, got gas, and headed back towards camp. We did take a detour on the way back and drove down to
Everglades City and then to Chokoloskee. This is an old fishing village and Seminole Indian village. We went through the Smallwood Store and Museum and saw what an old fashioned Indian Trading store looked like. We also walked on the
Fakahatchee Strand Boardwalk which went for over half a mile through a hardwood swamp. Kind of interesting and we didn't have to get our feet wet!
We hope to have better luck tomorrow as we spent way too much time in the truck today.
Entering Evedrglades City. This is a small laid back community and surprisingly quite a few homes, cottages and resorts.
Smallwood Store. A turn of the century(last century) Indian trading post and fishermans store. It is now a museum and gift shop.
All kinds of old stuff here. A lot of the shelves still hold merchandise from the 1920's.
They had a good selection of gator heads.
This is the entrance to the boardwalk. The walkway stretched for six tenths of a mile.
Here is a view of the boardwalk.
Some of the trees here were spared by the loggers and are huge!
